Ray Khoo, or Khoo Sui Hoe (丘瑞河), born 1939 in Malaysia, is a 1961 graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.
In 1974, he was awarded a scholarship grant from the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund to study the development of contemporary art in the United States, during which time he subsequently delved into printmaking in New York. From the 1960s to present, Khoo has held over 50 solo exhibitions in Asia, Australia, and the United States, in addition to group exhibitions in India, Japan, Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In 1978, he exhibited at the Raya Gallery, Melbourne and Newton Gallery, Adelaide in Australia. The Advertiser in Adelaide reported on 12 July 1978, “A naive figurative painter with overtones of surrealism, Khoo paints serene but mysterious, dream-like figures, unmistakably oriental, in the bold and vibrant colours so typical of S. E. Asian art”.
A show of Landscapes at the Alliance Francaise in Singapore, attracted Rachael Barnes to write a review for the Straits Times on December 4, 1979: “The motif which links all the works is the frame of a window through which we glimpse the vague, undefined landscapes. The symbolism is clear, the man-made window reminding us that nature is being seen and interpret by man.” He held another solo at Lynn Kottler Galleries, New York, in 1981, Renee Phillips wrote a reviewer in East Village, “The paintings whisper romance, bliss and sensuality united with a keen sense of order and design.
To view Khoo’s paintings is to enter a world of enchantment and mysticism, to be embraced by nature’s ethereal magic, to transcend, much like an experience in meditation.”
In 1994, Khoo’s paintings were accepted for auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s Singapore for the first time. In 2000, soon after he had a coronary bypass in Penang, he had another exhibition, Sui Ho @ Bellevue at the Bellevue Hotel. On viewing his artworks, John Lee Joo For wrote, “His more recent paintings show a significant departure from Man languishing placidly and complacently languishing in the midst of nature, to a tighter enclosure of Man in deeep thought, in an indulgent spell of introspection and contemplation, although still existing on a universal plane”.
Ray Khoo has lived in the United States since 1982. In 1996 he and his family moved from Houston, Texas, to their current residence in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
He travels between the United States and Asia twice each year to exhibit, observe, and attendexchanges with fellow artists. He had also scheduled to visit the South America year end of 2013.
